On Friday 22 March, Gem Hutchinson, Anneka Griffiths, Alan Emery and Dan Firmager from our Chatham office volunteered for a day at Slough Fort as part of our new volunteering initiative. All members of staff can take a full paid day out of work to volunteer for a local charity of their choice.

The fort is situated in one of the most isolated and elderly communities in the Medway Towns and is combating social isolation by providing residents the opportunity to gather and restore the fort together. Providing a great opportunity to socialise and learn new skills.

Our colleagues were tasked with painting a grade 2 listed building within the fort, along with an adjoining wall and a safety fence along the top of the wall.

Stuart Clack, Trustee at Slough Fort, commented: “The team consisting of Dan, Alan, Gem and Anneka took on the project with fantastic enthusiasm and managed to totally transform the area. The team managed to achieve what would have taken our regular volunteers weeks to achieve.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with this polite, friendly and dedicated team who have significantly helped with our community restoration programme on this little-known piece of local history and we have received many positive comments from our Trustees and volunteers about the work carried out. We would love to welcome Kreston Reeves back in the future for more team days or to use the fort for other events”.

Gem commented: “I thought it was a great way to get to know my colleagues better and as a bonus I got a chance to partake in activities I traditionally haven’t had the opportunity to be involved in.

“Not only did I gain a great sense of achievement, I also found it very rewarding knowing we were working together to help others and preserve history”.

Anneka commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed my day volunteering at Slough Fort. It was fantastic to see our day’s efforts come to fruition leading to a visibly positive transformation of the fort.

“The trustees were incredibly friendly and interesting, and we really enjoyed our own private tour of the fort! I would thoroughly recommend a visit to Slough Fort and I will watch with eagerness at the exciting things planned in the future”.
