Mandatory gender pay gap reporting was introduced last year for organisations with 250 or more employees, including schools and multi-academy trusts. If your school or trust has 250 or more employees, you need to report your data by 30 March 2018 on the government’s online reporting service, as well as your own website.

The information you will need to publish is as follows:

  • The mean and median pay for men and women in the organisation, which should include basic pay, paid leave, maternity pay, sick pay, shift premium pay and certain over allowances, but not overtime;
  • The average bonus paid to men and women over the preceding 12 months; and
  • The number of men and women working in each salary quartile of the organisation

If you have received a letter from the Government Equalities Office, use the reference number and security code in the letter to register to use the government’s online service. If you don’t have the letter, you can still register to use the service and wait for an identification number in the post. But be warned, this may take up to a week – therefore do not leave this to the last minute to comply by 30 March. There are currently no penalties or enforcement measures in place for those that fail to comply, but non-compliance may carry with it reputational risks.
