Back in February 2018 we featured an article on charity safeguarding, in response to the controversy surrounding Oxfam and the conduct of some of its aid workers.

This controversy was followed by a huge increase in safeguarding reports coming into the Charity Commission which prompted an almost immediate reaction.

The Commission released updated guidance in October 2018 to help educate charities and Trustees with their safeguarding responsibilities and it conducted a number of inquiries into charities where things had gone wrong. All Trustees should ensure they are familiar with this guidance – after all, one of the Trustees’ duties is to take reasonable steps to protect people who come into contact with their charity from harm.

Safeguarding continues to be one of the main topics covered in the sector news stories, so there is clearly some work to do, which has been recognised by the Commission. They have now asked charities to complete a short survey regarding their safeguarding guidance. The Commission plans to use the results of this survey to help shape safeguarding guidance in the future so that they can better communicate this to the sector. The survey should only take 5-10 minutes, so don’t miss the chance to have your say.
