About 7 years ago a Kreston Reeves client said that what he really needed was to be surrounded by “lively minds”. He ran 3 businesses from the family farm and was aiming to reduce his 80 hour week down to 60. A few months later, after a bit of planning, we put him in a room with 13 of our other clients. None of them had met before, but they were all Managing Directors of Kent businesses with income of between £1m and £5m and employed more than 10 staff. The first Intelligo Group was born (‘Intelligo’ is Latin for ‘realise’). The plan was that they would realise greater income and profits while enjoying a better quality of life and have some ‘Aha’ moments along the way. For want of a better term, it is a Mastermind Group.

At the first introductory lunch, one of them commented “when I turned over £200k I could go down to the pub and get some advice from the regulars – now that I’m up to £1.7m I wouldn’t trust their advice, but I’d trust those around this table” That individual now has turnover of £5m and rising…

There are now two groups who meet on the first Tuesday/Thursday of the month. This is supplemented by calls during the month. They arrange informal gatherings at other times as they have gelled so well. They do not want to talk about FRS102 or Making Tax Digital. What keeps them awake at night is growth, sales and marketing and staff issues – more recently funding issues creep in. Issues are discussed confidentially and a range of solutions are presented. There are some external guest speakers were these can provide expert insight into a topic.
