Oakam Limited Trading as “Oakam” or “Loal”

We spoke with Chloe to find out more about why she chose to go down the route of an apprenticeship, if she would recommend this route, what she enjoys most about it and what made her choose Kreston Reeves.

Chloe joined Kreston Reeves in January 2022 and is in her second year of her ACA training, having previously completed a Level 4 apprenticeship with one of the ‘big 4’ accountancy firms in the city and is now a Outsourcing Semi Senior within the outsourcing team.

What does Chloe’s typical day look like?

Chloe works across the Canterbury and Chatham offices of Kreston Reeves in the outsourcing team so her typical day involves preparing VAT returns, management accounts, day to day bookkeeping, keeping track of filing requirements for clients, going through invoices and reconciling bank statements. Chloe works with a range of clients in a range of sectors and no one day is the same.

What drew you to Kreston Reeves?

“In my previous apprenticeship I felt a bit detached from the team and like a small fish in a very big pond. So, when I finished, I decided I wanted a change and looked for a different type of firm. I spoke with a couple of the managers at Kreston Reeves before I applied and very quickly decided it was the firm I wanted to work with. What stood out was that people really want to work here. Many people have worked here for a long time which is important, as it demonstrates they enjoy being part of the firm and the work.”

What stood out to you about Kreston Reeves?

“I definitely feel rewarded and recognised for my work, and I like the personal touch the firm offers. My colleagues are very supportive, they listen to me, and they are helping me to drive my career forward. I enjoy the varied days, the team environment and that my work is appreciated. As we become more confident and capable, we are asked what we want to develop in and are given more responsibility. I feel really supported and I’m the sort of person who enjoys studying anyway. It doesn’t feel like a competition, all the apprentices are supported as a team.”

What encouraged you choose an apprenticeship over university?

“I did consider doing Maths at University as I really enjoy the subject, but when I looked into careers in accountancy, I realised an apprenticeship could offer me everything I wanted instead."

What opportunities for volunteering and social events are available at Kreston Reeves?

“There are lots of volunteering opportunities at Kreston Reeves and I really love getting involved. The social side is also really good and there are lots of events, so if you can’t make one you don’t feel like you have missed out as there will be an opportunity to go to something else.”

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in accountancy?

“For anyone considering a career in accountancy I would say it is an excellent route into the profession, you learn on the job and get great work experience. You learn vital skills such as communicating in a professional environment, all without the financial burden at the end.”
