Daisy’s journey at Kreston Reeves
After starting in an administrative role, Daisy Thompson has journeyed through years of dedication, study, and career growth to become a fully qualified accountant at Kreston Reeves. Her story is one of persistence, curiosity, and self-belief – qualities that have helped her transform an entry-level position into a rewarding career in accounting. Today, she not only manages a diverse portfolio of clients but also contributes strategically to the firm’s community initiatives. We caught up with Daisy to learn more about her career journey, the challenges she overcame, and what she has learned along the way.
Can you tell us about how you started at Kreston Reeves and what your initial role in the business was?
"I started at Kreston Reeves in a temporary role, recruited by a recruitment agent because I was unhappy in my previous job. My initial position was on reception, providing admin support for the office, and helping out across departments."
What motivated you to transition from an admin role to pursuing a career in accountancy?
"After graduating with a degree in Business and Finance in 2017, I wasn’t sure which career path to pursue. Being close to the audit department sparked my curiosity about the work they did and the technical challenges they tackled every day. Accountancy felt like a natural progression, so I decided to take the leap, knowing it would be both challenging and rewarding."
What was the biggest challenge you faced while working your way up, and how did you overcome it?
"Transitioning from admin to audit was a mix of excitement and challenge. Learning new technical skills and balancing work with study took focus and resilience. The exams were a big adjustment after a long break since university, and it was challenging to get back into study mode. Support from my peers and family made a huge difference in helping me find a routine and to keep going."
How did your time in admin help you in your role as an accountant? Did it give you any unique perspectives?
"Starting in admin gave me a unique perspective on the business. It showed me how crucial organisation and attention to detail are in every department and helped me connect with colleagues across various teams. This experience allowed me to see how each department contributes to the firm’s overall success, which is valuable knowledge I carry into my work as an accountant."
Professional development
How did Kreston Reeves support your career development and training?
“Kreston Reeves was incredibly supportive of my career development. They offered a comprehensive training program with soft skills and technical courses, and the on-the-job training from my peers helped reinforce what I was learning. Being able to apply these skills in real client scenarios added depth to my studies and made them feel practical and relevant.”
What was the process like in terms of qualifying as an accountant? Were there any key milestones or memorable moments along the way?
"The path to qualification was intense but rewarding, with memorable moments like passing my final exams and winning the Student of the Year award. Each milestone felt like a major achievement, especially knowing the hard work and dedication it took to get there."
Were there any mentors or colleagues who played an important role in your development?
"Yes, my manager Louise Thrower was incredibly supportive and played a big part in my career development. She consistently identified opportunities for growth and motivated our team to stay engaged and driven."
How has your role evolved since you first qualified, and what are some of the responsibilities you have now?
"Since qualifying, my role has expanded beyond audit work to include strategic responsibilities with the Kreston Reeves Foundation. I sit on the executive committee, where I contribute to our community outreach and charitable goals; an area I’m really passionate about."
Reflections and advice
Looking back, what are you most proud of in your career journey so far?
"I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come since joining Kreston Reeves in 2020 in an admin role. Winning the Student of the Year award was a big highlight and felt like recognition of my hard work and commitment."
What advice would you give to someone who wants to progress in their career?
"Stay curious, and look for ways to add value, whether that’s supporting team needs or identifying ways to improve processes. Any role within a business gives you a great vantage point so take advantage of it and explore areas that interest you."
What qualities or skills do you think helped you succeed in making this career leap?
"I’m quite outgoing, which helped me build relationships quickly and have open conversations about career paths. My degree helped with the technical side of things, but resilience and a strong work ethic were key in succeeding in both my exams and career development."
Were there any challenges you didn’t expect when you first started your accountancy qualifications? How did you handle them?
"The qualifications were more challenging than I expected. Failing one of my first exams knocked my confidence, but with support from colleagues, I passed it on my second attempt. Balancing work with study was a tough task, but once I found a routine, it became manageable."
Personal insights and future goals
What do you enjoy most about being an accountant, and how does it differ from what you expected?
"I love the problem-solving aspect of audit and learning about different businesses and charities. I didn’t expect the role to be so diverse and engaging, but there’s always something new to tackle, which keeps me motivated."
What’s next for you in your career? Are there any future goals you’re working toward now?
"I want to deepen my expertise in audit while making an impact in both the corporate and charity sectors. I also hope to expand the Kreston Reeves Foundation’s reach and potentially explore leadership opportunities in the future."
How do you maintain a work-life balance, especially as your responsibilities have grown?
"I’m a trustee of Wisteria Cat Rescue, which is very rewarding. Balancing this with my work responsibilities can be challenging, but I enjoy both and make time for the things I’m passionate about."
Fun and personal touch
Can you share a favourite memory from your time at Kreston Reeves?
"Some of my favourite memories are from the team volunteering days we’ve done with local charities like Wildwood Trust and Buttercups Goat Sanctuary. It’s always a great day out and meaningful to make a difference in the community with the team."
If you could go back and give your younger self advice when you first joined, what would it be?
"Believe in your abilities and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and with effort, you’ll achieve more than you thought possible."
