Our Chatham Maritime office

The first recorded mention of Chatham dates back to 880 AD, when it was referred to as ‘Cetham’. The name likely combines an Old English word, ‘Cetu’, meaning ‘basin’ or ‘valley’, with the suffix ‘ham’, signifying ‘settlement’.

Chatham was developed around the Historic Chatham Dockyard, which was established by Queen Elizabeth I in 1568 to build and refit ships. Numerous vessels were launched from Chatham dockyard, including the famous HMS Victory – the world’s oldest naval vessel still in commission. It lies along the River Medway, just above its confluence with the River Thames making it an ideal location for naval ships to be built. Opened in 1984, The Historic Chatham Dockyard museum now holds a large chunk of this history, hosting decommissioned ships and submarines, including the UK’s largest collection of RNLI historic lifeboats.

Chatham also holds a significant connection to renowned novelist Charles Dickens, who resided in the town in his early years. He described his time in Chatham as the happiest period of his life, with much of his work including ties to Chatham and the surrounding areas.

Our office is located next to The Historic Dockyard boasting charming waterfront views. The Maritime sector features a marina, restaurants, cinema, Dockside Outlet Centre, and The Copper Rivet Distillery famous for its ‘grain-to-glass’ range of spirits.

Our Partner in Accounts and Outsourcing Rachel Emmerson is Chatham’s office partner, who leads our team of Chatham accountants along with Partner in Audit and Assurance Rob Sellers.
