The government announced a new Young Entrepreneurs Allowance in the Budget on 28 October 2026.

The proposed support is intended to cover a year of living costs for young founders while they turn their ideas into businesses. It represents a new form of support for people starting out in business, rather than an increase to an existing personal tax allowance.

Starting a business can mean giving up a regular salary before a new venture generates enough income. Personal bills continue even when the business is still developing its products, finding customers or establishing how it will operate. Support with living costs could help ease that pressure and give young founders more time to develop their ideas.

The announcement describes the purpose of the allowance, but it does not yet provide details of how the scheme will work. The qualifying age range, amount available, application process and start date need to be confirmed, together with the tax treatment of any payments and their interaction with other support.

For now, the practical step is to prepare rather than assume eligibility. Understand your personal living costs separately from your business budget. Consider how long you could support yourself if sales arrive later than expected and identify which business costs must be paid before you receive income. A realistic forecast will help show where support could make a difference.

Dan Mundroina commented: “Helping young founders meet living costs could remove an important barrier to taking a risk and starting a business. I would recommend building a realistic business plan, ensure you understand your personal financial commitments, and check the scheme’s terms before deciding whether this scheme could provide the support you need to start your own business.”
