Oakam Limited Trading as “Oakam” or “Loal”

Josh Waldman joined Kreston Reeves in August 2021 and works in the Canterbury office as part of the audit team.

He didn’t go to university straight after school and instead went into a career in retail management. After a few years he moved to an office-based administration role and started to think about what he wanted to do in the future.

What influenced you to become an accountant?

“It was actually my older brother who suggested a career in accounting and that I should look at the roles on offer with Kreston Reeves as he had also completed his ACA training with the firm a few years ago. I got in touch with them, was accepted and started last year.”

What is the biggest benefit of working with Kreston Reeves?

“For me the biggest benefit of working with the firm is the complete package it offers. It’s a good location, offers great support and the opportunity to study and before joining I had only ever heard positive things about the firm.”

What made you choose an apprenticeship instead of going to university?

“I’m happy that I had some work experience behind me before I started the apprenticeship. When I left school, I couldn’t find anything I wanted to study at university, and I didn’t want to force myself to go – I didn’t see the point.  For me, an apprenticeship is definitely a better route into my career as I have the opportunity to qualify a year earlier than a graduate, and I haven’t got myself into lots of debt."

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others as a career path into accounting?

“An apprenticeship is a different career path and one which I would encourage other people to consider as it is a way to move forward in your career or change career without student debt and you get lots of support, training and work experience.“
