The challenge involved walking 10,000 steps every day for the whole month. Based on the average person’s stride this is equal to 5 miles, or approximately an hour and 40 minutes each day.
Like many, as high as one in three in the UK, Amy was compelled to take up this challenge after having been personally affected by the devastating effect of cancer, so put on her walking shoes and braved the unpredictable March weather.
“It was tough at first, especially on the days when the weather was at its gloomiest, but I quickly got into the swing of it and although ached initially, I am feeling much fitter and it’s nice to get away from screens and into the fresh air”.
“After using my smart phone to track my steps, I was amazed by how many steps you do daily without even really realising. Even walking to printer and back adds roughly 100 steps each time. To make up the additional steps my dog Wilson enjoyed longer than normal walks, I ditched the car in favour of walking to the office and took late night strolls”.
Whilst many up and down the country have reported reduced physical activity throughout the various lockdowns, Amy has reportedly benefited from reduced stress, increased energy levels and improved sleep. She has also explored her local area a little more and met friends for socially distanced walks.
By the end of the challenge Amy had walked over 150 miles – about the distance from London to Manchester and obliterated her £200 target by raising £767.50.
Director at Kreston Reeves Financial Planning, Tim Maakestad shares that “our firm has always been committed to supporting various charitable activities, from the Three Peaks Challenge to the London and Brighton Marathons. We are very proud of Amy for her achievement and for the raising of monies for such a worthwhile cause. Charities have been particularly affected by Covid 19 restrictions and Kreston Reeves Financial Planning has been delighted to have been able to help support Amy in her fundraising.”
All donations go to Cancer Research UK to fund research and provide help and support to cancer patients.
£5 can provide one of the ground-breaking research labs with the essential chemicals they need and £100 will go towards covering the running cost of Cancer Chat for one day, helping thousands of people through a very difficult time by giving them someone to talk to.
